Behind the Scenes: The Making of our Wenge Coffee Tamper.

wood turning

Each coffee tamper begins with a hand-selected piece of wood, chosen for its distinctive grain, colour, and natural character.  The wood is mounted on a lathe, where it is precisely shaped using sharp chisels to achieve the desired ergonomic profile.  Once formed, the piece is meticulously sanded and polished to a smooth, refined finish.  A protective coat of Odie’s Oil is then applied to enhance durability and depth of tone.  Finally, the stainless steel tamper base is securely attached, resulting in a perfectly balanced tool designed for both performance and beauty.

A Guide to the Materials in Our Coffee Tamper:

Wenge:

Made in the Glen is committed to sustainable sourcing. We acquired unused woodturning supplies from a local craftsman’s widow to create our unique wenge coffee collection. Wenge is an endangered species, so this collection is one-of-a-kind and does not obtain wenge from its origin.

The Tamper:

At Made in the Glen, we always select the highest quality kits for our woodworking projects. The stainless steel coffee scoop is a prime example. It has a sturdy and premium quality that is both durable, functional,  and attractive.

Caring for your Wenge Coffee Tamper:

  • Brush off any loose coffee with a dry brush after each use.
  • Regularly clean the tamper using a mild detergent and warm water.
  • Gently dry the tamper and handle well after cleaning to avoid moisture damage.
  • Do not soak the wenge coffee tamper in water.
  • Occasionally, apply a food-safe oil to the wenge handle to maintain its lustre and to avoid it drying out.
  • Store your tamper in a dry and cool place, away from direct sunlight.
