From Forest to Home: The Story of a Scottish Elm Tealight Holder

At Made in the Glen, we love to make beautiful Tealight Holders from locally sourced wood, such as this Scottish Elm.  We love to transform locally sourced elm and other woods into part of our tealight collection. These native Elm trees, once standing in Scotland’s landscape, have a unique and beautiful grain once turned on a lathe.  We love selecting this characterful wood, with its rich tones and striking patterns, for all types of our wood projects.  Through this journey of craftsmanship, these age-old elm pieces are revived and transformed into beautiful, functional tealight holders that can find a home in yours for years.

Making the Scottish Elm Tealight Holder:

Selecting the Elm

Julia, the skilled artisan behind our tealight holders, carefully selects each piece of Scottish elm with a keen eye for its unique characteristics.  She considers the wood’s colour, grain and density, seeking pieces that showcase elm’s natural beauty.  Often, elm features a striking green or even turquoise stripe and Julia deliberately chooses these to highlight their vibrant tone.  By enhancing these natural variations, she ensures that each tealight holder is not only beautifully crafted, but also uniquely captivating.

Shaping the Elm

Once the wood is carefully selected, it is cut to the required size, with the corners trimmed and rounded before a hole is drilled to secure the elm onto the lathe. As the lathe spins at between 1800-2500 RPM, Julia uses a gouge to turn and shape the wood carefully.  With patience and precision, the natural beauty of the elm is gradually revealed, its form emerging through the delicate process of woodturning.

The Perfect Finish

Once the elm tealight holder has been carefully shaped and smoothed with the bowl gouge, the finishing process begins.  While still on the lathe, Julia slows the RPM a little and sands the wood up to 240-grit to refine its surface.  She then applies Yorkshire Grit, which polishes the wood to an ultra-smooth finish, equivalent to 1500-grit sandpaper.  To protect and enhance the natural beauty of the elm, the holder is treated with two to three coats of Odie’s Oil, bringing out its rich tones and unique grain patterns.  A final buffing ensures a smooth, lustrous finish, ready to be enjoyed in your home.

Caring for your Scottish Elm Tealight Holder

To preserve the timeless elegance of your tealight holder we recommend the following:

  • Gently dust using a soft brush or cloth
  • Clean out the ceramic tealight holders carefully, if a residue remains, place in a tray of hot water to melt the wax and wipe clean with tissue.
  • Wash out with hot water and soap if needed.
  • After washing, dry thoroughly and replace with new naked tealights.
  • Occasionally, apply a small amount of walnut oil to the elm tealight holder.

Don’t forget to top up your supply of Naked Tealights for an eco-friendly, clean candle experience.  Made from 100% natural soy wax with minimal waste, these tealights are the perfect complement to your elm tea light holders.
