Restoring the Bowl: Shaping & Refining on the Lathe

When it comes to restoring a bowl, Julia takes the lead, bringing her expertise to the lathe.  With a keen eye for design, she carefully reshapes the piece, refining its form to create a more contemporary and elegant shape.  Using precision tools, she removes any traces of old varnish and imperfections, ensuring the bowl retains its character while gaining a fresh modern look.  Once the shaping is complete she meticulously sands the surface as it spins on the lathe, achieving a beautifully smooth finish.

When the item in question is a bowl, it's Ansell who steps in to work his magic using his lathe.  With utmost precision, he uses one of his sharpest chisels, deftly removing any traces of old and discoloured varnish.  He moves his chisel very carefully to ensure not a single scratch or alternation to the bowl's shape.  While still on the lathe, Ansell will sand the bowl while it is spinning, this ensures a really smooth finish.  Several coats of Odie's finishing oil are then applied and the bowl is left to dry and cure.

Bringin Colour to Life: Painting & Finishing

While still on the lathe, Julia carefully applies the paint, reducing the RPM to ensure an even, flawless finish.  She builds up the colour gradually, allowing each coat to dry before adding a second or even a third layer for depth and richness.  Once the paint it fully cured, the bowl is finished with a layer of Briwax, buffed to a soft sheen that enhances its character and durability.

The Thought Behind the Colour

We chose King George Green, a rich, earthy olive tone that exudes warmth and sophistication.  This versatile shade adds depth to the bowl while complementing its natural oak grain. With its timeless appeal, the colour brings a sense of calm and connection to nature, making this piece a striking yet harmonious addition to any space.  This matt paint is called King George and is available from Coat Paints.

Caring for your King George Green Oak Bowl:

  • Do not immerse in water.
  • Wipe clean with a damp cloth.
  • Occasionally apply a food-safe oil to the inside of the bowl to maintain lustre and to avoid wood drying out.

Suppliers:

We use Briwax as our finishing wax on painted finishes and Odie’s Oil on wood finishes.  

Our unique bowls are turned on a Jet lathe.
