A Journey of Reclamation: The Story of a Whisky Cask Tealight Holder

At Made in the Glen, we especially appreciate discarded whisky cask lids because we get to transform them into part of our Whisky Cask Tealight Holder Collection. Once part of Scotland’s rich whisky heritage, these weathered lids carry a story in their grain. Instead of letting them fade away, many artisans are now giving them new life. We love selecting these unique cask lids, still carrying the scent of whisky for all types of wood projects. Through this journey of reclamation, these age-old oak lids are revived and transformed into beautiful, functional pieces that can find a new home in yours.

Making the Whisky Cask Tealight Holder:

Selecting the lid

Each of our tealight holders is crafted from carefully selected whisky cask lids. Each one is chosen for its distinctive character, thickness and original markings. Some retain traces of their original paintwork, while others showcase the natural grain of the oak, or other markings such as distressed nail imprints or weathered textures, ensuring that every piece tells a story. These individual features are what give each tealight holder its special charm and atmosphere, making it a truly one-of-a-kind item for your home.

Clean, Sand and Finish

After years spent in the whisky-ageing process, these lids often arrive slightly warped or uneven. To ensure a stable and refined finish Julia carefully planes each one flat. She then creates the holes for the tealights, ensuring a perfect fit. The holder then undergoes multiple rounds of sanding with various grades of sandpaper, creating a smooth and tactile surface. To enhance the wood’s natural beauty, Julia applies several coats of Odies Oil, or Briwax if the holder retains the original paintwork, buffing between each coat. Finally, the tealight holder is set aside to cure, ensuring a flawless, lasting result.

Caring for your Whisky Cask Tealight Holder

To take care of your tealight holder, we recommend the following:

Gently dust using a soft brush or cloth
Clean out the glass tealight holders carefully, if a residue of wax remains, place in a tray of hot water to melt the wax and wipe clean with tissue. Then wash with hot water and soap.
After washing, dry thoroughly and replace with new naked tealights.
Occasionally, apply a small amount of finishing oil (such as walnut) to maintain its shine and natural beauty.
