Crafting Perfection: The Process Behind the Gibson Ballpoint Pen
Each one of our pens is turned on a lathe, using a specialised mandrel to ensure precision and balance. Carefully sanded and polished to a smooth sheen, every pen reflects the skill and craftsmanship required in the art of pen turning. This meticulous process, using delicate and intricate tools, results in a beautifully crafted pen designed to last.
A Quick Guide to the Gibson Ballpoint Pen:
A Little about Whisky Casks
Whisky needs to mature in oak casks for three years. The cask types influence the final flavour of the whisky. They must be made of oak as it prevents seepage and allows the whisky to breathe. A cooper makes, maintains and repairs whisky casks. A cask can last for 60 years, be used several times, and is often returned to the cooperage several times for repair. To create beautiful things with whisky casks is the ultimate in sustainability and is so thoroughly Scottish.
Cocobolo
At Made in the Glen we prioritise sustainable sourcing of our materials, avoiding purchasing wood from overseas, many of which woods are now endangered. However, because we embrace the concept of recycling we were happy to acquire a selection of unused woodturning supplies from a talented local craftsman who passed away. In a heartfelt gesture, his widow graciously sold us these supplies to ensure that the exquisite wood does not go to waste.
A little bit about Resin
Walking through our nearby forests, the sight of pine cones scattered across the ground gets us a little excited. We collect them and set them in resin. When they are carefully stabilised in resin and turned on a lathe, their intricate structures are revealed, creating mesmerising and unique patterns. This process transforms the natural elements into stunning works of art. To see more resin products check out our Artisan Keyrings.
