Behind the Scenes: The Story of a Whisky Cask Grazing Board.

Ansell cutting whisky staves to size to make the Scottish Whisky Cask Serving Board

At Made in the Glen, we get very excited about discarded whisky barrel staves, especially when we get to transform them into one of our Scottish Whisky Cask Serving Boards..  Once a component of Scotland’s rich whisky heritage, these weathered staves hold a story written in their grain.  Rather than letting them fade away, many artisans are now breathing new life into them.  We love selecting the staves, still scented with whisky, for all types of wood projects because we know that through this journey of reclamation, these beautiful pieces of age-old oak come back to life and can have a place in your home.

Making the Whisky Stave Grazing Board:

Cutting the Staves:

Our team carefully inspects and chooses the finest staves before cutting them to the necessary size. Each stave is then sanded by hand, just enough to create a smooth surface without erasing the distinctive charring on the barrel’s interior. The staves are arranged horizontally and bonded together with glue. This forms our unique side grain pattern for each board. After being clamped together, the stacked staves are left to dry.

Clean, Sand and Finish:

We then clean off any excess glue and finalise the shape of the board.  The grazing board then undergoes several rounds of sanding.  We work our way up through the different grades of sandpaper to provide a smooth and tactile finish.  Finally, several coats of Odie’s Oil are applied, and the board is set aside for the finishing oil to cure.

Caring for your Whisky Cask Grazing Board:

To preserve the timeless elegance of your grazing board, we recommend the following:

  • Gently hand wash using a soft brush or cloth
  • Avoid submerging your serving board in water.
  • After washing, stand it in an upright position to air-dry completely
  • Occasionally, apply a touch of food-safe finishing oil (such as walnut) to maintain its shine and natural beauty.

Suppliers:

For your peace of mind, our wood boards are treated with Odie’s Oil, a food-safe finishing oil made from natural ingredients, ensuring the longevity of your investment.  To find out more about Odie’s Oil, click here.
