From Barrel to Bathroom: the Journey of a Whisky Cask Soap Dish.

Our Whisky Cask Soap Dishes are crafted from authentic whisky casks, with the round dishes made from cask lids and the classic style from the staves.  Each one showcases the unique character of the wood, preserving the whisky cask’s heritage while giving it new life as a functional, eco-friendly item for your home.

The journey of a Whisky Cask Soap Dish is particularly fascinating. It begins with the sourcing of the cask. Each cask has imperfections and markings on the wood. It follows, therefore, that each finished soap dish is unique and charming. To make the soap dishes, we take the staves or lids from a deconstructed cask, cut them, and shape them on a lathe. The wood is then sanded down, polished, and treated with natural oils to enhance its natural beauty and durability.

The Story Behind Scotland’s Beloved Whisky

Whisky is Scotland’s national drink. It all began as a way of using up rain-soaked barley. In 1494 Friar John Cor was granted the king’s commission to make the ‘water of life’ aka whisky! Right now, over one hundred distilleries are operating in Scotland. Each distillery makes unique whisky with a signature taste.

Our local distillery is The Singleton, find out more at malts.com.

The Craft and Legacy of Whisky Casks

Whisky is matured in casks for a minimum of three years. Previously the casks will have been used to mature sherry, port, another whisky or beer. Its previous use all influences the final flavour of the whisky. The casks must be made of oak as oak is the only wood that prevents seepage and allows the whisky to breathe. A cooper is responsible for making, maintaining, and repairing casks. A cask can last for 60 years, be used several times, and is often returned to the cooperage several times for repair during its lifetime.

We love working with the whisky casks. To create beautiful things for the home with them is the ultimate in sustainability and provenance and is so thoroughly Scottish.

A Guide to our Whisky Cask Soap Dishes:

Whisky casks are typically made from oak. Natural tannins in the wood rise to the surface when it comes into contact with water. In this way, the wood protects itself against water seepage. This process will cause your soap dish to darken slightly over time. Nonetheless, this adds to the wood’s beauty and durability.

Taking Care of Your Whisky Cask Soap Dish:
  • Clean off residue soap with a cloth & rinse every couple of days.
  • Occasionally, allow your dish to dry completely.
  • Re-oil with Danish or Walnut Oil using a lint-free cloth.
