Behind the Scenes: Whisky Cask G&T Board.
At Made in the Glen, we get especially excited about discarded whisky barrels. Once part of Scotland’s rich whisky heritage, these weathered staves hold a story in every grain. Rather than letting them fade into history, we love reclaiming them for thoughtful, handmade pieces.
For our G&T Board, we carefully selecting the widest staves from the barrel, often still faintly scented with whisky, to creat a compact yet characterful board that brings a touch of the Highlands to your home.
Making a Whisky Cask G&T Board:
Our Process:
We choose the widest and thickest staves from the whisky barrel. We look closely at the grain, colour, and tone of the oak. Every stave is unique, shaped by its years spent maturing whisky. Once selected, each piece is cut and shaped by hand. We retain the original groove at the end of the stave, a subtle detail from its former life that added depth and visual interest. Once selected, each piece is cut and shaped.
Sand and Finish:
After shaping, the board is finely sanded through various grades of sandpaper and finished with a natural, food-safe oil to create a smooth, durable surface ready for use.
Caring for your Whisky Cask G&T Board:
To preserve the timeless elegance of your board, we recommend the following:
- Gently hand wash using a soft brush or cloth.
- Avoid submerging your serving board in water.
- After washing, stand it in an upright position to air-dry completely
- Occasionally, apply a touch of food-safe finishing oil (such as walnut) to maintain its shine and natural beauty.
