Julia Anne, a local watercolour artist, is drawn to this contrast between open landscape and simple shelter.  Her work captures the feeling of a Highland white-out, where the land feels vast and untamed, and the bothy becomes a place of refuge from the storm.

About the Artist: Julia Anne & Her Watercolour Art

Julia Anne is a watercolour artist based in Scotland, near Loch Ness.  She draws inspiration from the ever-changing landscapes of the Highlands.  Working from her studio in Glen Urquhart, she captures a place’s mood and atmosphere, inviting viewers to feel as though they have stepped into the landscape itself.

Sitting by a large picture window, Julia Anne paints using a blend of Winsor & Newton and Daniel Smith Professional Watercolours. She also uses vibrant Brusho Crystal Colour Pigments to add depth. 
Her brush collection includes Silver Brush Black Velvet No 8 and Da Vinci brushes.  These tools allow her to create delicate lines, loose washes, and the fine details that bring each piece to life.
 
Sometimes Julia will work from her living room, where she has a little vintage bureau, and she gets inspiration from our mountain views; that’s inspiration on the doorstep.

Heavy snow fell across the hills as Julia Anne walked her labradoodle through the landscape.  It is a place she knows well, yet the snowfall changed everything.
 
Snow is her favourite part of winter.  It brings a quiet stillness and offers a fresh way of seeing familiar ground.
 
The bothy sat quietly in the scene, its form softened by the snowfall as the space around it opened out.  It was a moment that felt calm, and one worth holding onto.
