The Inspiration Behind the Artwork

Suidhe Ghurimain is a hidden gem of the Scottish Highlands. It sits between Glen Affric and Kintail, overlooking the northwestern shores of Loch Ness. Its name means ‘seat’ or  ‘resting place’, and it offers a different view of the Great Glen.

For us, it is simply our mountain.  It is the view that greets us each morning, its mood constantly shifting with the light, the weather, and the changing seasons.

Julia Anne is drawn to this ever-changing landscape.  Her painting captures the mountain on a snowy day, a view we often wake to in winter. The pine forests at its base create a deep, natural contrast against the white of the hillside.  Every brushstroke captures the sense of winter stillness, perfect for those who love the Scottish Highlands, meaningful places, and the quiet beauty of nature.

About the Artist: Julia Anne & Her Watercolour Art

Julia Anne is a watercolour artist based in Scotland, near Loch Ness.  She draws inspiration from the ever-changing landscapes of the Highlands.  Working from her studio in Glen Urquhart, she captures a place’s mood and atmosphere, inviting viewers to feel as though they have stepped into the landscape itself.

Sitting by a large picture window, Julia Anne paints using a blend of Winsor & Newton and Daniel Smith Professional Watercolours. She also uses vibrant Brusho Crystal Colour Pigments to add depth. 
Her brush collection includes Silver Brush Black Velvet No 8 and Da Vinci brushes.  These tools allow her to create delicate lines, loose washes, and the fine details that bring each piece to life.
 
Sometimes Julia will work from her living room, where she has a little vintage bureau, and she gets inspiration from our mountain views; that’s inspiration on the doorstep.

The Original: Nature’s Ever-Changing Canvas
Captured from our home, this view of Suidhe Ghuirman is always shifting.  On this particular day, the mountain lay under a blanket of snow, and the light revealed details often softened by distance.
The trees appeared more defined, and the colours of the landscape stood out against the white.  It was a moment that called to be painted.
