From Salvage to Masterpiece: Crafting Chopping Boards with Reclaimed Wood.

At Made in the Glen, we actively explore the local auction house and salvage yards – two incredible places to uncover old furniture ripe for re-use. Our Reclaimed Wood Chopping Boards boast oak and/or mahogany salvaged from old tables. We believe that these materials have value beyond being discarded after they fall into disrepair.  We love to repurpose and give old things a whole new life, then, we can appreciate their beauty and usefulness once again.

Making the Reclaimed Wood Chopping Board:

Preparing the Wood:

We carefully inspect the dismantled tables and handpick the best of the wood for his project. We precisely cut it to the desired dimensions and sand away any pre-existing coatings. We then combine the oak and mahogany to create eye-catching stripes. Once the wood is dry, we remove any excess glue and expertly shape the board.

Clean, Sand and Finish:

The board undergoes several rounds of sanding.  We work our way up through the different grades of sandpaper to provide a smooth and tactile finish.  Finally, several coats of Odie’s Oil are applied, and the board is set aside for the finishing oil to cure.

Caring for your Reclaimed Wood Chopping Board:

To preserve the timeless elegance of your serving board we recommend the following:

  • Gently hand wash using a soft brush or cloth
  • Avoid submerging your serving board in water.
  • After washing, stand it in an upright position to air-dry completely
  • Occasionally apply a touch of food safe finishing oil (such as walnut) to maintains its shine and natural beauty.

Suppliers:
