A reclaimed oak board transformed into a show-stopping centrepiece.  Electric-blue resin flows through the wood like a river, catching the light with every glance.  Smooth, hand-oiled, and finished with a handmade leather handle, this one-of-a-kind board is both functional and artful.

From Salvage to Masterpiece: Crafting Serving Boards with Reclaimed Wood.

At Made in the Glen, we actively explore local auction houses and salvage yards – two incredible places to uncover old furniture and materials ready for re-use. Our Reclaimed Wood Boards feature oak and/or mahogany salvaged from old tables, each piece carrying its own history and character.

This Oak River Board is crafted from a reclaimed piece of oak from Daviot, a salvage yard close to Inverness.   The chunky piece of oak lay buried under other ‘treasures’, but we spotted it and saw its full potential despite the damage and wear and tear it had seen over the years.

Making the Oak River Board:

Preparing the Wood:

The piece of oak had areas of damage and even decay.  All the unstable sections of the wood were removed by hand and cleaned away, leaving behind hollows in the oak.  These hollows were filled with electric-blue resin, creating a striking river effect with natural chatoyancy.  You can see even the tiniest flashes of blue added to stabilise and complete the board.

Clean, Sand and Finish:

The Oak has been meticulously sanded and treated with multiple coats of Odie’s oil, buffed in between applications, to achieve a smooth, tactile finish that highlights the grain and depth of the wood.

The Oak River Board was then finished with a handmade, matching blue leather handle.  

Caring for your Reclaimed Wood Board:

To preserve the timeless elegance of your serving board we recommend the following:

  • Gently hand wash using a soft brush or wet cloth
  • Avoid submerging your serving board in water and never put it in the dishwasher.
  • After washing, stand it in an upright position to air-dry completely
  • Occasionally apply a touch of food safe finishing oil (such as walnut) to maintain its shine and natural beauty.
