Our craftsmen have a deep appreciation for working with elm burrs, carefully selecting each piece of its unique patterns and live edges. Secured to the lathe, the wood is skillfully shaped as its intricate grain and natural beauty emerge. Once the final form is perfected, the bowl is meticulously sanded, polished and finished to the highest standard, ensuring a truly one-of-a-kind piece.

The Beauty of Elm:
Scotland has various types of elm trees, but many have been affected by Dutch Elm disease. The Wych elm is especially beautiful and long-lived. Recently, an 800-year-old elm tree located in Beauly collapsed. Elm is still highly valued for its appearance, and we use locally sourced elm for woodturning to reduce our carbon footprint. Learn more about Scotland’s elm at the Woodland Trust. Occasionally, it’s possible to find a burr from an elm tree. When the elm burr is turned on the lathe, it creates stunning patterns that are impossible not to adore. Our craftsmen love to work with a burr especially to make these breath-taking one-off creations that embody the soul of Scottish Elm.

These unique formations create intricate swirling grain patterns, rich textures, and stunning variations in colour. Each burr is entirely one-of-a-kind, making it a favourite among artisans for crafting exceptional decorative pieces. When turned on a lathe, the hidden beauty within the wood is revealed, showcasing its organic edges, mesmerising swirls and deep natural tones.
Caring for your Elm Burr Bowl:
- This piece is best suited for decorative use. Simply dust with a lint-free cloth as needed to maintain its beauty.
- Occasionally, apply a food-safe oil to the elm bowl to maintain lustre and to avoid wood drying out.
- Do handle your bowl often; just holding it in your hands will allow the natural oils of your hands to soak into the wood.
