Her handknits are legendary and now that she has turned her attention to cashmere beanies – well we all wanted one!

A Quick Guide to Recycled Cashmere.

Kashmir Goat
A  History of Cashmere:

Scotland boasts a long history when it comes to cashmere. Dating back to the early 19th Century,  Scotland’s skilled craftsmen honed their expertise, creating exceptional cashmere products that are famous the world over.  Cashmere however, is from goats (Kashmir Goats) native to the Himalaya region and not native to Scotland at all.  The fine cashmere fibres are carefully combed or sheared from the goat’s undercoat during the moulting season.  In comparison to shearing sheep, very little in the way of yield results from each goat annually, thus making cashmere a valuable and expensive material.

Recycled Cashmere:

As we are committed to sustainable and ethical manufacturing processes we source the cashmere we use from Italy where it has been recycled from used and discarded cashmere garments.  Through meticulous sorting and reprocessing, Millefili breath new life into discarded cashmere, minimising waste and reducing the environmental impact of the fashion industry.  The resulting cashmere fibres are spun onto cones which we then use for our cashmere beanies.

Cashmere as a textile:

We are so happy to have this sustainable resource available to us as we believe it combines the two worlds of sustainable fashion and the long history of cashmere in Scotland.  Cashmere has a soft and lightweight feel yet it is exceptionally warm, perfect for winter wear.

Caring for your recycled cashmere beanie hat:

We wash every hat by hand to ensure its softness before we send it to you. We recommend that you wash your hat periodically to keep it fresh and clean. To do this, simply hand wash it in warm water using a suitable wool detergent, we recommend this one. Rinse it thoroughly in cooler water and make sure that all detergent has been removed. To wring out simply wrap it in a large towel and twist the towel to wring it out. Afterwards, lay the hat out flat on a fresh dry towel to air dry. If needed, you can very gently press it with a cool iron. Just remember not to tumble dry or machine wash it.

Our Suppliers:

We source our recycled cashmere from Millefili in Italy.  Watch this video to see how the recycling is done. You can find out more about Millefili here.
