Behind the Scenes: The Making of our Highland Keyring Collection.
Our Highland Keyrings begin with the selection of a small piece of locally sourced wood, such as elm, whisky cask, or birch. The wood is then mounted on a lathe, where is it expertly shaped using a sharp chisel. Once the desired form is achieved, the piece is refined, sanded and polished to a smooth finish. A protective layer of Odie’s Oil is applied before the metal ring is attached, completing the handcrafted creation.

Some information on whisky casks:
Whisky needs to mature in oak casks for three years. The cask types influence the final flavour of the whisky. They must be made of oak as it prevents seepage and allows the whisky to breathe. A cooper makes, maintains and repairs whisky casks. A cask can last for 60 years, be used several times, and is often returned to the cooperage several times for repair. To create beautiful things with whisky casks is the ultimate in sustainability and is so thoroughly Scottish.
A bit about Elm:
Scotland has various types of elm trees, but many have been affected by Dutch Elm disease. The Wych elm is especially beautiful and long-lived. Recently, an 800-year-old elm tree located in Beauly collapsed. Elm is still highly valued for its appearance, and we use locally sourced elm for woodturning to reduce our carbon footprint. A guide to Spalted Birch:
The Scottish glens are often adorned with birch trees. We have a particular fondness for spalted birch because it generally has exquisite patterns and hues caused by the fungus growing inside the tree. These dark lines and patches create an eye-catching visual effect, making it a highly sought-after material for craftsmen who value its aesthetic appeal.
