Apple Cider Vinegar Hair Rinse
Gentle, Natural Shine and Balance.
Many of us crave hair that feels light, soft, and manageable—but daily styling, hard water, and product buildup can leave it dull and weighed down. A simple, natural solution is an apple cider vinegar (ACV) hair rinse.
Start with a Gentle Cleanse
For the best results, begin with a mild, nourishing shampoo. Made in the Glen’s no-poo shampoo bar is formulated to cleanse without stripping (best suited to soft water areas), helping to maintain your hair’s natural oils and is ideal if you are allergic to surfactants.
Why ACV?
Apple cider vinegar is acidic, which helps to:
- Restore your hair’s natural pH
- Smooth the cuticle for shine
- Remove residue and buildup
- Enhance shine and softness
Important: Always use organic, unfiltered ACV with “the mother” as it contains the natural enzymes and beneficial compounds that make this rinse effective.
A Herbal ACV Rinse Recipe
Particularly effective after using a no-poo shampoo bar, this rinse also soothes dry or flaky scalps.
Some hair will hold onto minerals from the water, or ingredients from the shampoo and can become dull, or the scalp can become itchy.
You will need:
- 200ml of filtered or natural spring water
- 1 peppermint tea bag
- Approx. 4 drops of rosemary essential oil
- 1 or 2 tbsp of apple cider vinegar (1 tbsp for dry hair, 2 for more oily hair)
- Optional: additional herbs such as sage, rosemary, or nettle
Method:
- Boil the water and pour it over the peppermint tea bag. Leave to infuse for ten minutes, then remove the tea bag. (Tip: You can infuse additional dried herbs along with the tea as you wish. Sage, rosemary, and nettle are all good choices for the hair – strain afterwards.)
- Add the rosemary oil.
- Add the apple cider vinegar (1 tbsp for dry hair, 2 for more oily hair).
- Allow it to cool and decant it into a reusable squeeze bottle, ideally with a nozzle for easy, even dispensing over the hair.
- Once you have washed your hair, shake the bottle well and pour the mixture over your hair, making sure not to get it into your eyes.
- Rinse well until the scent of the vinegar is faint, and your hair feels clean and fresh.
- Dry and style as normal.
This is particularly good for dry, flaky scalps. The apple cider vinegar in the rinse removes any buildup and residue from the hair.
Use the rinse once a week.
Peppermint:
Is gentle, refreshing, and soothing for the scalp.
“Strong peppermint tea, allowed to cool, can act as a hair rinse to add shine and combat dandruff.”*
Rosemary:
Supports scalp health, traditionally used to strengthen hair and enhance its natural lustre.
“The astringent properties of rosemary oil make it an excellent skin toner and balancing hair rinse, which can treat hair loss and dandruff.”*
Sage:
Soothes irritation and can calm flaky or sensitive scalps.
“Sage oil can be used as a hair rinse to control dandruff and restore shine and colour to greying hair – simply dilute it in water and vinegar.”*
Nettles:
Rich in minerals that help hair feel strong and healthy, particularly for dry or dull hair.
“Capable of reducing hair loss and improving the condition of hair, nettles provide hair follicles with vitamins and minerals (potassium and iron) for stronger, healthier hair growth“*
Why this Works:
- Balances the Scalp: ACV and herbs help maintain a healthy environment.
- Smooths the Cuticle: closed cuticles make hair feel softer and appear shinier.
- Removes Buildup: Residue from water, styling products, or even shampoo is gently lifted away.
A Meaningful, Natural Routine
Gentle cleansing, thoughtful restoration, and shine, all in a simple natural ritual.

Safety First: Never Use ACV Neat
Apple Cider Vinegar is highly acidic. Using it undiluted (neat) on your hair, scalp, or skin can cause irritation, redness, and damage to hair cuticles.
This guidance is intended for cosmetic and wellness purposes only. It is not a medical guide.
Always dilute apple cider vinegar as described; never use it undiluted. If you have any scalp, skin, or health concerns, please consult a qualified professional before trying new routines.
